Last month members of Bakewell Age UK enjoyed an afternoon watching the archive compilation film of farming across the East Midlands. The majority of the elderly members who attend the Bakewell sessions have lived in rural areas or been involved in agriculture all their lives so remembered much of what they saw.

A pleasant couple of hours were spent reminiscing about days gone by and people and places they used to know. Farming is changing rapidly and moving with the times and whilst the day to day life of a farmer and their family is physically easier, the audience in Bakewell remembered the old days very fondly.

The film was compiled by Mace, The Media Archive for Central England and has been screened for all the farmers and young people who participated in the Combine workshops.

This is a beautiful venue in the centre of Corby Old Village, it’s only remaining thatched building. To enhance the exhibition the museum is also displaying some farming related artefacts to illustrate more fully the old way of life for the farming community in Northamptonshire.

On the 12thFebruary, Junction Arts will be delivering two free creative workshops. They will take place between 10.00-12.00pm and 1.00-3.00pm. Participants can make their own picture of farming and rural life to take home using a clever technique involving carbon paper. Almost like magic, it enables people of any ability to create an image of which they will be proud.

The Kingswood School in Corby, whose pupils participated in the project, also have on display in the reception area, a mini Combine exhibition featuring a project banner and the specially commissioned film.

On the 7th November everyone involved in the project were invited the Rutland County Museum to celebrate the project, meet everyone who took part, see their work in the exhibition, as well as to have their own Combine publication presented to them by the Heritage Lottery Fund Committee Member, Gail Pringle.

Paul Steele, Managing Director of Junction Arts, introduced those attending to how the project came about with a pilot project that took place in Derbyshire. He then went on to say how important the project was for Junction Arts, as it is their first regional project, highlighting the many new partners and participants who have benefited from taking part.

Gail also said a few words and praised the project team and Junction Arts for delivering a high quality, fully engaging project, adding that the project gave HLF very good value for the money awarded. She then went on to present the Combine publication to the young people who took part.

It was a great event and good to see everyone again who took part in the project. It gave us all a chance to reflect on their achievements, as well as enjoying lots of lovely cake!

Thank you again to Emma Warren and the rest of the staff at the museum for helping us to make this event the success that it was. And thank you to all those who were involved in the project overall.
