Farm tour

29th February – On the first day of activities, the group of 10 students from Rutland County College, in Great Casterton, had an informative visit to Richard’s farm, and were given a tour round by Judith Smith, who also farms in the area. Judith introduced the students to the farming practices carried out on Richard’s farm, as well as covering the HLS work currently being undertaken, from hedge planting, to the growing of heritage grasses, as well as providing beetle banks between fields to encourage wildlife. There was also the chance to explore the unique earth works which marked out the former site of an ancient monument / castle. Richard told the group that his particular breed of cattle (Saler) liked to hide their young in the hollows around this site, which makes them hard to find.  dscn0322
